Isolate them and you become reality.
Lifton's first criterion of ideological totalism is milieu control: control of all communication a person receives, including — he adds — communication with themselves. Hassan's BITE model divides the same territory into behavior, information, thought and emotional control.
The mechanism is comparison. A person detects that something is wrong by comparing it against something else: another account, another person's reaction, a memory of how things were, a norm from outside. Remove every source of comparison and the group's account of reality is not the most plausible account available. It is the only one.
Asch's finding then operates unopposed. Chapter 8 established that a single visible dissenter collapses conformity by roughly three quarters. In a closed environment there is no dissenter, because dissenters are removed and because the environment is constructed to prevent the discovery that anyone else doubts. Chapter 167's enforced silence is the most complete version ever documented.
Jonestown is the case in the outline, and the sequence is worth setting out because it is a procedure rather than an event. Peoples Temple moved from Indianapolis to California, then to a jungle settlement in Guyana reachable only by air or boat. Passports were collected. Mail was read. Radio contact was controlled. Members worked long days and were kept awake much of the night. Relatives in California — the Concerned Relatives — spent two years assembling affidavits and could not reach anyone inside.
Nine hundred and eighteen people died on 18 November 1978.
The operational elements, in ascending order of cost, are: occupy the target's time; discourage outside relationships as insufficiently serious; relocate; control the channel; and make the outside world frightening, which supplies the reason for all of the above and converts the isolation into protection.
The boundary is where this law's severe form has a legal name. Isolation is the core diagnostic criterion of coercive control, which is a criminal offense in England and Wales under section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015 and in a growing number of jurisdictions. That is not a coincidence of drafting: legislators identified isolation as the mechanism because survivors and researchers identified it as the mechanism.
The counter is chapter 314.
