Freeze, Flight, Fight: The Limbic Sequence Under Threat

When a threat is detected, the response is not a single reaction but a sequence, and it does not begin with fight or flight.

It begins with freezing. The animal literature on this is extensive and the human literature has caught up: on detecting a potential threat, the organism stops moving, heart rate slows rather than rises — a parasympathetically mediated bradycardia — and attention sharpens. Karin Roelofs's 2017 review calls this attentive immobility and locates it in circuits running from the amygdala to the periaqueductal gray. It is not paralysis and it is not passivity. It is an orienting state that maximizes sensory acquisition while minimizing the movement that draws a predator's eye, and it precedes the decision about what to do next.

Only then does the cascade proceed to flight, or distancing, or the various partial versions of it — turning away, leaning back, blocking with an object, covering. And only if escape is unavailable does it proceed to fight.

Kasia Kozlowska and colleagues' account, published as Fear and the Defense Cascade, extends the sequence further at the extreme end, through tonic immobility and collapse — responses that appear when neither flight nor fight is possible and that are relevant to how trauma survivors behave in ways that are routinely misread as consent or indifference.

What makes this useful for an observer is that the early stages of the cascade are autonomically driven and precede conscious appraisal. You cannot decide not to have them. A person who has been asked a question that constitutes a threat will show something within a fraction of a second, and it will most often be a brief cessation of ongoing movement: the hand that was gesturing stops, the foot that was swinging stills, the person who was shifting in their seat goes quiet. Navarro's counterintelligence framing puts the same observation in operational terms — sudden stillness at one specific question is among the most reliable indicators that the question landed.

And then comes the caveat that this entire part of the guide is organized around, and that this chapter exists to state as plainly as possible.

The defense cascade signals threat. It does not signal guilt.

An innocent person who has just realized that they are a suspect in a serious crime is under threat, and their physiology will say so. An employee asked about a discrepancy they did not create but will be blamed for is under threat. A witness who is protecting somebody else, or who is ashamed of something unrelated, or who has been in a police station before and knows how it goes, is under threat. The freeze is real, the reading of it as evidence is not, and Part 4 of this guide is substantially a catalog of what happens when interrogators make that inference: Darrel Parker, the Central Park Five, Brendan Dassey.

So the correct use of the cascade is diagnostic in a narrow sense. It tells you which question mattered. It gives you a place to look, and the thing to do with a place to look is to go and find evidence there — not to conclude that you already have it.

The case

The defense-cascade model in modern affective neuroscience — Roelofs’s 2017 review ‘Freeze for action: neurobiological mechanisms in animal and human freezing’ and Kozlowska’s ‘Fear and the Defense Cascade’ — applied to interview behavior by Navarro’s limbic-system framework.

The mechanism

Threat detection routes through the amygdala to brainstem circuits producing a staged response: freezing (bradycardia, reduced movement, attentive immobility), then flight or distancing, then fight. Because these are autonomically driven, they precede conscious appraisal and are hard to inhibit, which is why sudden stillness or blocking behavior at a specific question is diagnostically valuable. The critical caveat is that the cascade signals threat arousal, not guilt — an innocent person facing accusation shows the same physiology.
