Make them argue your case to themselves.
Festinger and Carlsmith's dollar experiment, chapter 13, is the founding demonstration. Subjects who told a stranger that a tedious task was interesting, for one dollar, subsequently reported that they had genuinely enjoyed it. Subjects paid twenty dollars did not.
The mechanism is insufficient justification. A person who has advocated a position and has an adequate external reason for having done so — they were paid well, they were ordered, they had no choice — experiences no contradiction. A person with no adequate reason has a contradiction between what they said and what they believe, and the statement cannot be unmade, so the belief moves.
The consequence for an operator is counterintuitive and is the reason this law is in the codex. Do not pay the target well. Do not compel them visibly. Arrange for them to advocate your position, with the smallest possible inducement and the maximum possible appearance of free choice.
Self-generated argument is also more persuasive than received argument for a second and independent reason: the audience cannot discount its own source. Every counter-argument a person can raise against a claim from outside — they would say that, what is their interest, what are they leaving out — is unavailable against a claim they produced.
Yan'an Rectification, chapter 199, is this at institutional scale. Cadres wrote their own self-criticisms, at length, in their own hands, repeatedly, before their peers, with pressure calibrated to be sufficient but not so severe that compliance could be attributed to force. That calibration is the technical achievement, and it was carried forward into the struggle sessions of chapter 201 and into the confession practices of chapter 160.
The soft version is everywhere and is legal. The sales technique of asking the customer to state the benefits back to you. The workshop exercise in which participants write down why the change is necessary. The interview question inviting the candidate to explain why they want this. Each produces an artifact in the target's own voice.
The boundary is compelled speech. There is a real difference between inviting someone to articulate a position and requiring them to, and the difference is not the words produced but whether refusal is available. Where a self-criticism is a condition of continued employment, membership, or physical safety, the technique is coercion regardless of how gently it is administered, and the belief it produces is manufactured rather than persuaded.
The counter is chapter 285's mirror: decline to make the argument.
No defense chapter in the outline. A counter written for this guide.
